MIMS New Directions Workshop
Functions of Matrices
May 15-16, 2008

This workshop is part of the MIMS New Directions series of workshops taking place in MIMS throughout 2008. The workshop concerns functions mapping Cnxn to Cnxn, of which the most important examples include the matrix exponential and the matrix square root. Interest in the theory and computation of functions of matrices has grown sharply over the last 10 years or so, as a result of new applications and improved numerical methods that make new approaches practically viable. Functions of operators are also of interest and will be represented in the workshop.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers working on both the underlying theory of matrix or operator functions and numerical methods for their computation. It is fitting that a workshop on matrices be held in 2008 in MIMS because 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of Cayley's memoir marking the birth of matrix theory (Arthur Cayley, A memoir on the theory of matrices, Philos. Trans. Roy. Soc. London, 148:17-37, 1858), and in that paper Cayley treated square roots of 2x2 and 3x3 matrices.

This is an informal 2-day workshop limited to about 30 participants. Financial support is coming from the Royal Society and the Wolfson Foundation.

The organizer is Nick Higham.
