Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

The Computational Science and Engineering Department at STFC's Daresbury and Rutherford Appleton Laboratories is engaged in the development and optimization of applications, algorithms, technology and services across a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial applications with a focus on High-Performance Computing (HPC).

The Numerical Analysis Group works on practical aspects of numerical analysis with a strong emphasis on issues related to HPC. The main area of the Group's research is the development of theory, algorithms, and codes for the solution of large scale problems in numerical linear algebra and optimization. The Group's software is available through HSL (formerly the Harwell Subroutine Library, started in 1963) and GALAHAD (for optimization software) and has for some years been free for the UK (and, for GALAHAD, international) academic community. The Group has strong natural interactions with the Department's Advanced Research Computing, Computational Chemistry and Distributed Computing Groups, with their foci on numerical and computational problems and supporting high-performance technology.
